Commitment to Special Education
Special education has opened a whole other world of education for me. I have had approximately 90 hours of teaching observation in a special education setting. These have included a self-contained mental impairment classroom, resource room, and a self-contained behavior disorder classroom. Within these settings I have seen a variety of teaching, adaptive, and differentiation skills. I have also learned the importance of assistive technology and non-English language proficiency.
Throughout my special education courses I am able to sign over 12 words, make basic requests, and answer questions in American Sign Language. To demonstrate my ability to communicate with non-verbal students I have created a communication board. The board allows a student to answer simple questions by pointing or placing a picture on their answer. For example, I could ask the student if they would like to pass a ball or listen to music. They could point to a picture of the ball or a picture of a music note.
My experience with assistive technology isn't very proficient as I haven't had much opportunity. I have written a paper on how to change the batteries in a hearing aid to demonstrate my knowledge of assistive technology. I also use computer assisted technology by allowing and reminding my students to use grammar and spell check when processing documents. This gives them the freedom to express their thoughts by word processing it with some grammatical direction. I am an advocate for special needs. I recently emailed our representatives about preparation for special education teachers. I haven't received a reply yet. I also receive monthly emails from the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).
I have included several artifacts below that show my commitment to special education. The first is a Peer Assisted Learning Strategies assignment I completed in 460. I feel that this is a great strategy to use in the classroom, it not only benefits students who struggle but the students who are helping their peers. The next two artifacts go together. It is a 331 case study that shows great reflection, data based decision making, and charts that show growth. The next artifact is a paper that I have composed about changing the batteries in hearing aides. The last two artifacts are pictures of a communication board that I have created. This can be helpful to all students in the classroom. It helps students communicate their schedule as well as their feelings.
