Commitment to Diversity
Just like the world, our classrooms are diverse. A teacher is never going to have two students that need the exact same attention. I want students in my classroom to be proud and confident about who they are and where they came from. I want to celebrate culture and backgrounds. Students should know that being different from their peers is not a bad things. All of the children in a classroom should have the chance to be on the same playing field. It is my job to close the gap of any children that may not feel that way.
I have had multiple field experience placements in diverse elementary schools. This has given me some experience with creating a safe environment for all children to learn. I attended a Professional Development seminar on Ruby Payne's Framework of Poverty. It really opened my eyes about the types of poverty that teachers will be confronted with. The seminar also helped with suggestions and skills in order to provide the best service for people facing poverty and trying to overcome types of diversity.
I have included several artifacts below that I feel represents my commitment to diversity. My first artifact is a Power Point presentation with regards to under represented groups in education. The under represented group that I chose was people with dyslexia. I think students in our classrooms deal with this more that teachers realize. The presentation could help motivate students who may struggle with this issue. The second artifact below is a profile of a student that I worked with in my Special Education 328 placement. This student had a speech impediment and it really hindered his learning process. Working one on one with me really gave this student the boost the he needed and that extra time to get back on track and feel more grounded in the classroom.
The next two artifacts go together. This artifact is an interest inventory I created for my Teach Reading class. I used this in a third grade classroom to become more familiar with the students. This inventory also helped me to choose some of the materials I used in the lessons I taught. I also wrote the students notes, mentioning something about a fact they put in the interest inventory. This helped me connect with the students one on one as well as helped me to remember their names. The last artifact I included is a board game that I created for my Special Education 331 class. I demonstrated the Vowel Game in the classroom to my fellow students but I also used it in my classroom observation. The students were very responsive to the game. When I used the vowel game in the classroom I was able to differentiate for the instruction for students who were having trouble with connecting words to the pictures. I paired those two students will peers and they were able to give hints to get them to the correct word. I monitored each group to assure the peer helpers weren't giving away the word with the first hint.
The last three artifacts show disaggregated data that I collected within a 426 lesson that I taught in my present observation. The data shows that when the pretest was administered both the boys and girls were within a few questions from each other. After I taught the lesson and the post test was administered the data shows that the girls made the biggest improvement.
The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education. - Martin Luther King, Jr.
